“2021 INTERNATIONAL CHAPTER ARCHITECTURE AWARDS - EMERGING ARCHITECT PRIZE
Luke Hayward - atelier Luke
Luke has successfully established a remarkable international practice between Australia and Japan producing outstanding work of a unique sensibility, reflecting both cultural influences. The practice is exemplary in the Australian international arena and the intimate scale of atelier Luke’s projects, such as the Terrace House near Demachiyanagi, have been recognised locally and internationally for their design excellence.
Producing projects that are enriched rather than constrained by their limitations, Luke’s projects appear to successfully marry the freshness of Australian design with the precision and character of traditional Japanese architecture, creating an architecture that reflects both Australian and Japanese sensibilities. The scale and detailing of the buildings are reminiscent of Japanese architecture, while the openness and use of the materials convey a distinctive echo of Australian architecture.
Through his practice, Luke demonstrates how Australian architects, armed with vision, curiosity and courage, can step beyond the boundaries and make an outstanding contribution both to their own practice and to the profession at large.
Luke has demonstrated his generosity and support for the profession through mentoring and advising fellow architects in both Australia and Japan.”
