Broken Workshop
Byron Shire, Australia
Broken Workshop is on site now, with works anticipated to be completed early in 2022.
This farm shed has been proposed in response to both the brief requirements, to provide storage and workshop space to augment existing farm activities, and to the landscape qualities of the rural site in the Byron Bay hinterland.
The design for this small project features fine craft combined with large engineering gestures. Expressed steel beams achieve impressive open spans, allowing interior spaces to truely flow into the exterior. Whilst fine carpentry, copper detailing and board formed concrete bring tactility and refinement to the materiality of the project.
Emphasising landscape, rather than building, this small structure is sensitively sited to integrate into the existing topography. Hardy ground covers and native grasses will be used primarily in the new landscaping, with the intent of subtly feathering the new work into the existing context.
