Cicada Seat

This six legged bench seat with two wing-like boards on top was designed to accompany the Kashihara Table.

At almost 2 metres long, the seat can comfortably accommodate up to 4 adults. The associated forces under load are managed by a unique understructure — providing great strength and stability, whilst maintaining an overall appearance of lightness and subtlety.

Thinly tapered and steeply angled legs at the edges are braced by thin brass rods, connected back to a hidden central beam with an internal pair of legs. A series of battens allow the illusion of thinness in the cantilevered ends and also provide a pleasant surprise for those inquisitive enough to duck underneath to inspect the structure up close.

Designed in Osaka, Japan, the the Cicada Seat was handmade in Billinudgel, New South Wales, in American white oak with a water-based finish.
