Bulimba Brew Box

Brisbane, Australia

This small addition to a pre-1946 Queensland house provides a dedicated space for brewing craft beer in addition to secure vehicle storage and improved access to the existing residence.

In response to town planning controls for building character, the front of the structure has been designed as a subtle reinterpretation of local 'timber and tin' traditional building character. The simple form continues the roof line of the neighbouring home, with a palette of galvanised steel and Australian hardwoods playing typical roles. When transitioning to the backyard these same materials shift function, with galvanised cladding giving way to an array of native timber battens.

The roof form similarly shifts, creating both a less-traditional form and also picking up the rear roofline of the house (the result of a previous unsympathetic modification of the original dwelling).

Internally, a simple structure of exposed timber portal frames provides increased ceiling clearance and further experiments with the notion of timber construction within the traditional Queensland context.

Town planning approval has been granted for the project and construction is anticipated to commence in late 2018.
